The Montessori School of the Berkshires: Elementary Teacher Job Description

As The Montessori School of the Berkshires (MSB) continues to expand programs on a new 40-acre LEED for Schools green campus, we are seeking a certified Montessori elementary teacher for a large, vibrant classroom of 6- through 12-year-olds. Preference will be given for 6-12 training.

Summary The Elementary Teacher will work within a teaching team to uphold authentic Montessori principles and create a successful learning environment for each student. The ideal candidate will be passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic about fostering a life-long love of learning, and will demonstrate the following: a strong commitment to the profession and furthering one's professional development; effective organizational and inter-personal communication skills; and an ability to work as a team member.

Responsibilities

The Classroom: Create a nurturing, respectful, inspiring, and safe learning environment.
• Provide and support learning experiences in accordance with authentic Montessori philosophy and practice.
• Collaborate and support teachers throughout the school to effectively develop, share and participate in learning activities.
• Assure that Montessori methods, classroom environment, and individual student needs are addressed.
• Keep accurate records on individual students’ development.

Student Family and Support: Ensure warm and effective connection between home and school, and support ongoing communication among the triad of parents, students, and the teaching team.
• Provide parent-teacher conferences twice a year to provide feedback on students’ intellectual, emotional, and social development.
• Respond to parent inquiries, in collaboration with Director of Education.
• Support communication to parents according to school guidelines.
• Ensure successful transition of students from Children’s House and into Adolescent Experience.

Professional and Personal Growth: Model lifelong learning and meet professional development requirements.
• Attend professional development workshops outside of school.
• Create yearly professional goals and discuss with Head of School.
• Peer coach, as observer and instructor.

Administrative Responsibilities: Assist in the efficient and effective management of the school.
• Demonstrate professionalism in every aspect of the job and adhere to school guidelines and professional standards.
• Follow protocols for managing information (i.e., attendance, record keeping) and completing requests (i.e., purchase orders, supplies, personal days), etc., as further detailed in Faculty Handbook.
• Observe all school deadlines (i.e. submitting classroom newsletters, preparing progress reports, etc.).
• Attend staff meetings and special events.
• Maintain open communication with administration and colleagues and voice concerns to and seek help from administration in a timely and positive manner.

Qualifications
• BA/BS Degree Required and MA Degree preferred
• Montessori Teaching experience
• Montessori Teaching Credential – preferably 6-12
• Understanding of and commitment to Montessori Philosophy
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty to enhance whole school learning environment and community
• Commitment to professional development and best practices in education
• Commitment to meeting the needs of each child
