Go Beyond : The Campaign for the Montessori School of the Berkshires.

From the time MSB opened its doors 10 years ago in 2006, and ever since its foundation over 100 years ago, Montessori has been moving beyond conventional education, with our multi-aged classrooms, focus on the individual child, child-led style of education that takes advantage of natural human tendencies like exploration, the need for community and connection, and the quest for self-perfection.

Dr. Maria Montessori wrote, "Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment." She added..."The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences."

Our environment has been changed as we have assessed our challenges and opportunities over the last ten years. We opened with one Children's House room. We added an Elementary class as we had students ready to move up, then expanded into a second Children's House room. Knowing we needed more space for Adolescent and Toddler programs, we found our current site and built our current 9,000 sq/ft facility which opened in 2010.

We have always been looking beyond where we are: how to evolve, what’s next, what will be best for families, staff and students. We find ourselves using our library space (which is already part of the elementary room), as the art room, conference room, music room. The entry way gets pretty crowded during drop-off and pickup, and our staff has grown and outgrown their original workroom. We are bursting at the seams.

For more than a year now, we have been going through a creative, in-depth process involving our board, facilities committee led by our talented architect and board member Dana Bixby, our staff, and some parents to develop some ideas for the next phase of MSB’s success.

Beginning later this spring, we will be breaking ground on a 7,300 sq/ft addition. This project will be executed in two phases, and completed by September 2017.

To fund this expansion and other strategic initiatives needed to take MSB from startup mode into maturity, we are launching "Go Beyond":  a comprehensive capital campaign to raise $2.95 million.  We are thrilled to report that, thanks to the board and other early donors, we are 86% of the way to our goal, and will be raising the remaining $411,000 over the next 5 years. With the support of our full community and outside donors, we will have no difficulty reaching this goal.

You can find the most current information about the expansion and our campaign on our campaign webpage.
