Peter Metz is a retired academic physician, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Emeritus at UMass Chan Medical School (retired as of 6/30/2023). He was at UMass for 40 years where he wore multiple hats, including Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Training Director of the Child Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program, and Learning Communities Mentor for UMass Medical Students.  Among other activities, he was involved in training 65 child psychiatrists and in mentoring 60 medical students over his years at UMass. He continues volunteer teaching at the medical school as well as activities with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Peter attended Harvard College and Harvard Medical School.  He received residency training in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital, University of Washington; adult psychiatry at Mass Mental Health Center, Harvard; and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard before joining the faculty at UMass Chan Medical School in 1983. Peter has two children and three grandchildren and is divorced. He moved full-time to the Berkshires in 2019, but has been coming to the Berkshires during the summers since he was a teenager, especially for Tanglewood. Peter has played the piano since childhood and enjoys all types of music, especially classical. He also enjoys time with his children and grandchildren, hiking, rowing, theater and dance, traveling, going to museums, and meeting people.



In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for MSB, Peter’s community activities in the Berkshires include serving as a congregation member and Trustee to Church on the Hill UCC in Lenox, as a volunteer with Volunteers in Medicine, and as member of the West Stockbridge Historical Society. He lived in West Stockbridge for four years before moving in August 2023 to Pittsfield (South Pond Farm).
